Training at Team Lakay in La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines, Joshua “The Passion” Pacio, 24, of Baguio City, Philippines is the reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion. Mixed martial arts champions like him are often asked who their dream opponents are.
“Honestly I’m not the guy who has a dream opponent,” Pacio stated. “I just focus on improving every day and every bout. I am a champion and I need to prove that every time I step inside the circle.”
Pacio first earned the ONE Strawweight World Championship title on September 22, 2018 by dethroning Yoshitaka “Nobita” Naito, 35, of Japan. But on January 19, 2019, the Team Lakay representative lost the belt to Yosuke “The Ninja” Saruta, 32, of Japan.
On April 12, 2019, Pacio reclaimed the belt from Saruta in their rematch. Since then, the Team Lakay representative successfully defended the title from two challengers namely Rene “The Challenger” Catalan, 41, of the Philippines and Alex “Little Rock” Silva, 37, of Brazil.
Under the watchful eye of Team Lakay founder and head coach Mark Sangiao, Pacio and his team combine a strong work ethic with deep-rooted values to achieve unprecedented success. They did not start out with any fancy equipment but the strength of their collective mindset gave them everything they needed to succeed.
Despite not having a bout booked for the first time in a long time, Pacio maintains a sharp mindset. He looks to carve out an enduring legacy in the world’s largest martial arts organization.
